On 19 August 2020, Chairman of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus Vladimir Andreichenko took part in the opening ceremony of the Fifth World Conference of Speakers of Parliament, held in the format of videoconference.

The opening ceremony was attended by the President of the Austrian National Council Wolfgang Sobotka, President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union Gabriela Cuevas Barron, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres.

In his video message to the conference participants, the Chairman of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus noted that the complexity and inconsistency of the processes taking place in the world, as well as the growing lack of trust lead to the task of more active participation of parliamentarians in ensuring peace, harmony, and sustainable development. The solution to this problem is possible only in the conditions of dialogue and mutual understanding, mutually beneficial trade and economic relations, ensuring equal access for all states to the advanced achievements of science and technology, he stressed.

Vladimir Andreichenko called on his colleagues — speakers of parliament — to support unifying initiatives aimed at achieving the mentioned goals. Among them are the initiatives of the President of the Republic of Belarus to restart the Helsinki process and the formation of a digital good-neighborhood belt. “We must consolidate our efforts to overcome the crisis of multilateralism, create a new, more just system of international relations,” stressed the Chairman of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus.

The agenda of the event covers such actual international issues as the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals for the period up to 2030, cooperation in the field of health, economy and environment, ensuring gender equality and the empowerment of women, participation of youth in politics and parliamentary activities.

As a result of the conference, it is planned to adopt a declaration on parliamentary leadership for more effective multilateralism that delivers peace and sustainable development for the people and planet.

The videoconference was attended by the Chairperson of the Standing Commission of the House of Representatives on health, physical culture, family and youth policy Lyudmila Makarina-Kibak and the Chairperson of the Standing Commission of the House of Representatives on Economic Policy Leonid Brich.
