On 3 March 2020, the Chairman of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus Vladimir Andreichenko met with the Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó, who was in our country on his working visit.

The Chairman of the House of Representatives commended the high dynamics of political dialogue between Belarus and Hungary what has a beneficial effect on bilateral economic relations. The implementation of agreements on investment and interregional cooperation signed during last year’s visit of Péter Szijjártó to Belarus contributed to an increase in mutual trade turnover by 30%.

Undoubtedly, parliamentary diplomacy will help strengthen friendly relations between the peoples of Belarus and Hungary and expand mutually beneficial cooperation in all areas of interest. The President of the House of Representatives emphasized the need to establish direct contacts between members of parliamentary friendship groups.

In order to take relations to a new level, Vladimir Andreichenko conveyed an invitation to his colleague the Speaker of the National Assembly of Hungary László Kövér to visit Belarus at any time convenient for him.

In turn, Péter Szijjártó confirmed the significance of parliamentary dialogue, since he has been a Member of the Hungarian Parliament for 18 years. The diplomat emphasized that any bilateral interaction is based on trust, which is present in relations between Belarus and Hungary. At the same time, he assured that Hungary will strive for closer cooperation with Belarus both in trade, economic and investment spheres, and in the international arena, promoting the idea of rapprochement between Belarus and the European Union. According to the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Belarus’s chairmanship in the Eurasian Economic Union also opens up great opportunities for cooperation.

Vladimir Andreichenko extended appreciation for the support that Hungary provides to Belarus in normalizing relations between Belarus and the European Union. He noted that Belarus favors constructive interaction and ensuring pan-European security and for this purpose advocates the idea of resuming the Helsinki-2 initiative, which the President of the Republic of Belarus proposed at the opening ceremony of the 26th annual session of the OSCE PA in 2017 in Minsk.

The parties agreed that inter-parliamentary cooperation will take its rightful place on the bilateral agenda.

From the Belarusian side, the meeting was attended by the Chairperson of the Standing Commission of the House of Representatives on National Security Oleg Belokonev, Head of the Working Group of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus on Cooperation with the Parliament of Hungary — Member of the Standing Commission of the House of Representatives on International Affairs Valery Voronetsky, Member of the Working Group of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus on Cooperation with the Parliament of Hungary — Member of the Standing Commission of the House of Representatives on Low Irina Lukanskaya.
