From 10 to 12 May 2021, within the framework of the 142nd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, a meeting of the Forum of Women Parliamentarians of the IPU was held.
During the meeting, the promotion of gender equality in the
context of the impact of the coronavirus and the priorities for recovery from
the pandemic were discussed.
The delegates of the forum discussed the results of the
inter-parliamentary dialogues held in March and April 2021 with the support of
UN Women.
On the first day of the Forum, participants discussed the
topic “Towards a gender responsive post-COVID recovery”. The speakers shared
their vision of solving the problem and the best practices applied in their
countries. A discussion took place on the gender implications of the COVID-19
pandemic and priority actions by parliaments.
At the end of the meeting, elections were held to the Bureau
of the Forum of Women Parliamentarians.
Maria Vasilevich, member of the Standing Commission of the
House of Representatives of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus on
Human Rights, National Relations and Mass Media, was elected a member of the
Bureau of Women Parliamentarians.
The Bureau of Women Parliamentarians assists the Forum of
Women Parliamentarians in resolving organizational issues, for example,
prepares sessions of the Forum of Women Parliamentarians, contributes to its
normal operation, coordinates the initiatives of women parliamentarians, as
well as activities of the Forum of Women Parliamentarians and other bodies of
the Inter-Parliamentary Union.
On the last day of the Forum, equality of generations in
parliaments was discussed.
2020 marked several important milestones: 25 years since the
adoption of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, the 20th
anniversary of Security Council Resolution 1325 on women, peace and security,
and five years since the adoption of the 2030 Agenda. the goals set in these
key tools are still far from reach. It was in this context that UN Women, in
partnership with the governments of France, Mexico and civil society groups,
decided to launch the Generation Equality Forum. It is a unique platform
focused on intergenerational dialogue and multi-stakeholder cooperation to
achieve gender equality.
The online meeting was attended by a member of the Standing
Commission of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of the
Republic of Belarus on Human Rights, National Relations and Mass Media Maria
Vasilevich.
