15 April 2021

On 15 April 2021, under the auspices of the IPA CIS, together with the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, the Mediterranean Parliamentary Assembly and the UN Counter-Terrorism Office, an international parliamentary conference «Global Challenges and Threats in the Context of the COVID-19 Pandemic. Terrorism and Violent Extremism» was held.

The conference participants noted that international terrorism and extremism are global threats and must be combated together. In order to prevent the risks of terrorism and to address the sources that violate international stability, a new strategic direction for the international community as a whole that excludes double standards is needed. Global challenges and threats cannot remain unaddressed and unanswered.

The parties to the inter-parliamentary dialogue also drew attention to the need to continue work on legislative consolidation of measures to counter the dissemination of intentionally false reports of acts of terrorism on the Internet, to establish additional requirements for telecommunications operators. And they called for special attention to the promotion of the values of tolerance, peacefulness and tolerance in societies.

The conference was held in the format of four thematic sessions «Legal Mechanisms of International Cooperation in Countering Terrorism and Violent Extremism», «Assessing the Terrorist Threat and Efforts to Prevent Violent Extremism», «Promoting and Protecting the Rights of Victims of Terrorism and Addressing Their Needs» and «Democracies Facing COVID-19 Pandemic».

The online conference was attended by deputies of the House of Representatives Aleksandr Danchenko, Tengiz Dumbadze, Igor Martynov, Valentina Razhanets, Andrei Savinykh.
