On 21 January 2020, during the visit of the Chairman of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus Vladimir Andreichenko to the State of Israel, he met with the Speaker of the Knesset of the State of Israel Yuli-Yoel Edelstein.

Noting the importance of the International Holocaust Remembrance Day, Vladimir Andreichenko told how the Belarusian Parliament honors the memory of Jews who fought against Nazism. Among them were deputies of the BSSR Supreme Soviet of the 1st Convocation Boris Perochinsky and Foma Lasko. Their names are engraved on commemorative plaques in the foyer of the Oval Hall of the House of Representatives. The Chairman also mentioned that the copies of existing documents about them will be transferred to the Holocaust Remembrance Center Yad Vashem.


The parties also discussed the prospects for the development of bilateral inter-parliamentary cooperation.

Vladimir Andreichenko singled out the productive nature of interaction between the parliamentary friendship groups. He expressed hope for the 23rd Knesset (which is to be elected in March) to also form the League of inter-parliamentary friendship «Israel — Belarus».

The need for closer cooperation within international organizations, in particular OSCE PA, was emphasized during the meeting.

In addition, the parties discussed the prospects of creating a Free Trade Zone between Israel and the EAEU. Vladimir Andreichenko explained that the sixth round of negotiations on the conclusion of the Agreement on a Free Trade Zone between the EAEU and the State of Israel is planned to be held in March 2020 in Moscow.


The Chairman of the House of Representatives invited the deputies to work on the joint Belarusian-Israeli Committee on Trade and Economic Cooperation.

Noting the importance of regional cooperation, Vladimir Andreichenko pointed that today, twin-city relations have been established between 8 pairs of cities. For instance, the settlements of Kiryat Bialik in the Haifa district and the Glubokoye District of the Vitebsk Region. He also mentioned the importance of preserving the places of cultural and historical heritage, such as the places of joint residence of the Belarusian and Jewish peoples on the territory of Belarus. For example, the life of the father of modern Hebrew Eliezer Ben Yehuda is connected with Vitebsk Region.


The prospects for cooperation in the fields of science, innovation, medicine, agriculture and tourism were also discussed during the meeting.

At the end of the meeting, the Chairman of the House of Representatives left an entry in the Knesset Distinguished Visitors’ Book. In particular, he remarked: «The bilateral interparliamentary ties rely on centuries of history of mutual relations between our friendly nations in the Belarusian land, which acted as a cradle of three Presidents and three Prime Ministers of the State of Israel, prominent Jewish thinkers, religious figures, and the father of modern Hebrew.

Speaking in favor of preservation and development of our historical ties and traditions, I sincerely wish my Israeli colleagues constructive and fruitful work for the sake of peace, stability and prosperity of the State of Israel».

Vladimir Andreichenko is visiting Jerusalem to participate in the events of the International Leaders Forum dedicated to the International Remembrance Day of the victims of the Holocaust and the 75th Anniversary of the Liberation of Auschwitz.
