On 7 April 2021, in the House of Representatives the members of the Working Group of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus on Cooperation with the Parliament of the Republic of Latvia had an online meeting with the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Latvia to the Republic of Belarus Einars Semanis.

The participants of the meeting exchanged opinions on the status and prospects of Belarusian-Latvian cooperation. The preservation of the approaches and principles on which Belarus is ready to build interaction with Latvian partners was soundly confirmed.

Anna Starovoitova, Head of the Working Group of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus on Cooperation with the Parliament of the Republic of Latvia, informed about the steps being undertaken by the Republic of Belarus to normalize the internal political situation in the country, the dynamics of the ongoing constitutional process and the development of intra-social dialogue.

In turn, Einars Semanis has admitted that at this complicated time in all relations diplomatic channels should remain open. He expressed hope that the cooperation will develop and wished Belarus to be an independent, sovereign, stable, economically developed and democratic country.

Oleg Belokonev, Chairperson of the Standing Commission of the House of Representatives on National Security, called for a balanced, unbiased and constructive position of Latvia towards Belarus, stressed that the intensification of interparliamentary cooperation would contribute to the development of a comprehensive mutually beneficial dialogue in the spirit of good neighbourly relations.

Svetlana Gorval, Member of the Standing Commission of the House of Representatives on Economic Policy, emphasized the importance of the development of Belarusian-Latvian trade and economic relations taking into account the common interest in effective use of the potential of our countries for joint promotion and implementation of promising projects.

Both parties stated the mutual interest in preserving communication channels, continuing working contacts and maintaining the dialogue.

The meeting was also attended by Marta Veikeniece and Laura Mežecka, counsellors of the Embassy of the Republic of Latvia in the Republic of Belarus.
