On 15 September 2022, the Chairperson of the Standing Commission of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belaruson International Affairs Andrei Savinykh took part in the debate dedicated to the 25th anniversary of the adoption of the Inter-Parliamentary Union of the Universal Declaration on Democracy, which took place in a videoconference format.
In September 1997 the Inter-Parliamentary Union adopted a Universal Declaration on Democracy at its 161st session in Cairo (Egypt).
In connection with its adoption the International Day of Democracy was established by UN General Assembly resolution dedicated to supporting the efforts of governments to develop and strengthen democracies (Resolution No. A/RES/62/7).
It has been celebrated annually on September 15 since 2008.
